Curriculum

The curriculum is the medium through which the whole child is educated. All subjects in the curriculum are important during a child’s time at school.

The Scottish Education Department has produced documents which set out guidelines within the age range 5-14.

These documents cover the following curricular areas:

  • English Language

  • Mathematics

  • Environmental Studies

  • Expressive Arts

  • Religious, Social, Moral Education

  • Health Education

These Curricular Guidelines set out what pupils should be expected to learn at each particular stage. They help us to plan programmes of work, to assess and record children’s progress and to report back to parents.

We use these documents to plan each curricular area to ensure:

  • Breadth

  • Balance

  • Coherence

  • Continuity

  • Progression

Input from visiting specialists and invited speakers extends and develops children’s knowledge. Field trips and educational visits play their part too as active involvement leads to successful learning.

Our purpose is to provide children with challenging attainable tasks and to promote positive habits of learning which will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives.
