Determined to Succeed
The Scottish Executive is keen for all young people to develop and practise enterprising skills and attitudes on a regular and consistent basis in all schools which will enable them to develop the positive values, attitudes and behaviours that, on leaving school, will prepare them for the challenges ahead in the real world.

Here at Inveravon we believe that embedding Enterprise in the curriculum and promoting a “can do” attitude is essential for the development of life skills which will ultimately lead to the enrichment and development of “the self within.”

Our garden club has been productive for many years now and continues to grow and develop. Our pupils are skilled Sweet Pea growers and each year we seem to grow more and more. Many of these are sold to the community along with the surplus of the other varieties that are grown in the school greenhouses. Our current Enterprise is the production of the monthly school newsletter. Despite some initial hitches the pupils are now confidently using their enhanced IT skills to produce a quality colour newsletter for parents and members of the community.

Apart from dates for the diary the newsletter showcases the work of individual pupils and reports on some of the activities they experience in school. In November our enterprising pupils hosted a Teddy Bears Picnic for the preschool children in the community. Careful planning ensured that the youngsters had a very enjoyable afternoon while at the same time the pupils discovered that it was not quite as straight forward as they had imagined it would be.

Health Promoting Schools
By 2008 all schools in Scotland have to achieve accreditation as a Health Promoting School. We launched our programme over a year ago with an evening of activities for parents and the children which highlighted the dangers of alcohol, smoking and unhealthy eating. Since then the pupils have followed a programme of work which has led to a greater understanding of how they can lead a healthy and active life. Our most recent and exciting event has been the introduction of Toastie Tuesday which provides a healthy alternative to some of the usual playtime snacks.

The new year will see the launch of Milkshake Monday and Fruity Friday. The pupils take responsibility for the organisation of these activities on a rota basis and  really enjoy the challenge not to mention the healthy alternative! The committee is drawn from pupils, parents, support and teaching staff who meet each term to collate the responses from parent questionnaires which help to identify the priorities for future action. In May 2007 we received our Commitment award which is the first stage of accreditation to be a Health Promoting School. We will now focus on activities which will enable us to reach the next level of Commended.

Eco School
Over the last few years the Eco Committee which is made up of pupils, staff and Mrs Tricia Lawson, who is a long standing friend and former parent of Inveravon School, have been very active. After an initial audit to determine what we already did in terms of energy conservation, reusing and recycling waste and improving school grounds, a plan for improvement was drawn up.

This led to the installation of bat and owl boxes, the development of a wet area to encourage wildlife and the planting of a small orchard with fruit trees and bushes. A greenhouse was built using recycled plastic bottles and an additional compost bin was added to the two existing ones. Inside the building the pupils made posters to encourage energy savings and used stickers to encourage everyone to become more energy aware by switching off lights and computer monitors when not in use. The learning outcomes and objectives concentrate on pupils developing an awareness of the benefits and values of biodiversity in their local surroundings and of the wider world.
